Vengerka -- Vindeliska

Country: Tornedalen, Sweden & Toorniolaakso, Meänmaa, Finland
Type: couple dance
Formation: open circle of couples, facing LOD
Steps: step-hop, run, side-step, 

Vindeliska-step: hopping on inside foot, point outside foot, with straight ankle and pointed toes, crossed in front of inside foot (1:1), 

diagonally forward and to the side (1:2), close to inside foot (1:3), pause with lift (1:4)
Music: any moderate to slow schottis/jenkka with appropriate length and structure.


 

 

Dance progression

1-2

(a)

In crossed-back hold position, beginning with ML/WR foot, dance 2 step-hops forward in LOD (1), followed by 1 Vindeliska-step (2), hopping on MR/WL foot.

3-4

 

Dance 4 running steps, turning CCW as a couple on the spot (M backward, W forward)(3), followed by 1 Vindeliska step (4).

1-4

 

Repeat (a).

5-6

(b)

Beginning with outside foot, and dropping hand hold, dance 2 step-hops to change places, W passing in front of M to her L, and M passing to his R (5), followed by 1 Vindeliska-step (6).

7-8

 

With 4 running steps, turn individually on the spot, M turning CW, W turning CCW (7), followed by 1 Vindeliska-step (8).

5-6

 

Repeat (b) to return to place. This time M passes in front of W moving to his L, and W to her R (5). Resume cross-back hold position, and dance 1 Vindeliska step (6).

7-8

 

With 4 running steps, turn individually on the spot (7), M turning CCW, W turning CW. All dance 1 Vindeliska step (8).

 

 

Repeat from (a) as desired.

Source: As described in a mimeograph in the archives of Björkstalaget [folk dance group] in Umeå. The mimeo is likely from the 1940s. Björkstalaget was started in 1923, and according to its anniversary pubication from 1973, this was included in a performance by the group in 1932.
